Proud to live in Waitakere City
Waitakere, separated from the rest of Greater Auckland by a causeway over a narrow isthmus to Auckland City and the upper harbour bridge, which runs to the North Shore, has always stood out as a uniquely distinctive region in its own right. West Harbour, Hobsonville, Whenuapai and Massey, where most West Harbour 2000 members live, have a long history, dating back to the earliest settlement of Auckland. Farming, viticulture and pottery formed an original basis for life in the late 1800’s.
Development was initially slow; allowing the establishment of the typical “ways of the West”, but during recent decades there has been extensive and spectacular growth both in population numbers and ethnic diversity.
Sitting between the Waitakere Ranges and the Waitemata Harbour, the benefits of widely ranging activities are at our doorstep. All forms of leisure pursuits, the arts and other delights abound. There is involvement, loyalty, energy and direction in the life of the community. Aucklanders and other visitors head to Waitakere for their weekend recreation, to enjoy bush walking, picnicking, scenic driving, surfing, swimming, fishing and boating. Others come to enjoy the benefits of the wine trail; West Auckland wines are consistent award winners at home and abroad.
